EXCERPT:
On May 21 the people of this county will be called upon to vote for candidates in two contested races and a number of uncontested races.
It is the opinion of the editors of this newspaper that it would serve our readers to endorse candidates in two upcoming local political races. And to recognize those candidates running unopposed in other races. These endorsements are simply that, our opinion. This is why you’re reading this on the Editorial/Opinion pages of the paper or the website and not in the News section.
It is not our desire to bash any candidate or to engage in or fuel political mudslinging. There is enough of that in national politics. So it is with distinct pride that we begin this endorsement by saying that all the candidates in the contested races have shown themselves capable of good, competent leadership.
Floyd County Sheriff: While candidate Robbie Whitfield is a veteran law enforcement officer and, from what we can tell, a pretty decent guy, we would like to endorse our current sheriff Dave Roberson in this race. Roberson has done an exemplary job in fulfilling the duties of his office. He has earned the trust and respect of those in his department and is a well liked figure in the Floyd County community. Dave has certainly shown his willingness to be present in a wide range of community activities and events. In his four years he has even taken on the role the state has forced all sheriffs into — a provider of mental health services. Dave isn’t a speaker, he’s a doer and he’s shown his worth to the citizens of Floyd County in the past four years.
